Rumors have been circulating for some time about the next iterations of Call of Duty. Thanks to Tom Henderson at VGC, we now understand that the upcoming “Warzone 2” will be a full sequel and new console/PC only.
Warzone has been a tremendous success for the Call of Duty franchise and Activision. After surpassing 100 million total players, the latest update took players to the Pacific and aligned with the launch of Vanguard. However, according to multiple sources, 2022 will be the final Call of Duty to support the Xbox One and PS4 generation, with 2023’s Call of Duty being new-gen only.
According to Henderson, and a few additional sources found online, this will also align with the new Warzone which will not be a continuation, but rather a full sequel built for the new hardware.
Warzone 2 is literally that… Warzone 2.
Current gen and PC only… No past weapon integrations etc.
A completely new game for the better hardware.

Our Take
It’s clear that Activision was planning very big things for Call of Duty, particularly with moving all development resources to the IP. Whether or not that evolves with the Xbox acquisition is yet to be seen. Regardless, we’re excited by the prospect of development transitioning fully to the new hardware. No matter what, if you’re a Call of Duty fan, you have a lot to look forward to.
