Sony Finally Caves to the Crossplay Pressure, Opens Beta with Fortnite

Crossplay

After many months of being in the spotlight for disallowing crossplay on their platform, including disparaging remarks from the CEO himself, it seems as though Sony is finally caving in to gamers’ requests.

Via the PlayStation Blog, Sony has announced that they will open Fortnite to crossplay through a beta on the PS4:

The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.

Our Take

Quite frankly, it’s about time. Despite all the comments and excuses we’ve seen over the past several months, it’s clear this is the right direction for gamers and we’re happy that Sony is finally moving towards it. We hope that in the future, games will be playable across all platforms without boundaries.
