The Nintendo Switch isn’t just off to a fast start, it’s officially off to a record start. Nintendo of America has announced that after selling 4.8 million units in just 10 months, the Switch is now the fastest selling home console of all-time in the United States.
The news was reported by Business Wire this morning which confirmed the Switch had surpassed the prior record holder, Nintendo’s own Wii, which had sold more than 4 million units in the same time period.
Nintendo President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime had the following to say:
“Fans across the country have experienced the joy of playing their favorite games at home or on the go. Now that many more people have received Nintendo Switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond.”
Our Take
The video game market is certainly booming. With the PS4 continuing to sell extremely well world-wide, the Xbox being more profitable than ever, and now the Switch selling at a record pace, it’s never been a better time to be a gamer. With Zelda and Mario in particular, the Switch really saw a boost in 2017. The question now of course, as we discussed in our latest Bitcast, is how does Nintendo carry this momentum through 2018 and beyond? We’re excited to see.
