One of the surprise third-party announcements from this summer’s edition of their PlayStation State of Play, Stuntman Hollywood brings back the Stuntman series back after an almost 20 year hiatus since the release of Stuntman Ignition back in 2007.
For those who don’t know about the series considering its near two decade absence, Stuntman basically puts you in the role of a stuntman ready to perform some of the most dangerous stunts in movies. Stuntman Hollywood keeps the spirit of the franchise intact, but unlike the last entry in Stuntman Ignition where you perform stunts in made-up movies, Hollywood will have you performing stunts in some pretty notable movies from the Universal Studios catalogue. Think movies like Fast & Furious, Knight Rider, Back to the Future, Miami Vice, Earthquake and more.
In our 30 minute hands-on demo we got to play at Summer Game Fest, we got a taste of five of the levels you’ll get to play through Stuntman Hollywood. The gameplay is classic arcade score chasing, where your goal is to nail every challenge all in one run. The challenge comes from running the levels again and again until you perfectly nail every stunt the level asks from you, whether its hitting a specific map point at a certain speed, get your car to turn at specific angles, or depending if you’re playing a movie level, recreate specific stunts seen in the movies.
From the five levels we got to see, the two movie levels we got to see were Back to the Future and Earthquake. While the Earthquake level was a pretty basic but fun speeding through debris that reminded me of the game Motorstorm Apocalypse, the Back to the Future level was the absolute highlight of my demo.
Beyond the fact I adore the movie, it was so much fun seeing the recreation of the “Marty McFly escapes from the Libyans” scene perfectly recreated. The stunts required you to nail the speed and tempo of that scene while completing stunts such as perfectly nailing 180 degree turns and hitting 88mph. Since the game has the full use of the license, every single detail from this level perfectly recreated the film, and made it the level I kept repeating to try to nail 100% challenge completion while smiling throughout. If the level of detail from the Back to the Future and Earthquake levels is any indication, fans of these Universal movies are in for a treat.
While there is no defined release date yet, the Saber representative told us they are making sure the full release be feature complete at launch with no plans for DLC yet. Whenever it arrives, look forward to Stuntman Hollywood to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Look for more coverage as soon as the game gets closer!
