Changes happen fast in the gaming industry. Just a few weeks ago, many believed Xbox/Microsoft would be acquiring Discord. After that fell through, just a few weeks later we learn that PlayStation will begin integration with Discord.
Announced via an SIE Blog this morning, PlayStation President and CEO wrote that beginning in early 2022, PlayStation would begin to integrate with Discord.
Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.
According to Ryan, PlayStation has made a minority investment into the platform as well.
To bring these experiences to life for our players, Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round.
Our Take
This is certainly interesting and likely a very smart move for PlayStation. Generally speaking their communication capabilities are behind the curve, and with Discord representing such a large portion of gaming communication today, it could certainly improve the PS platform significantly. We’re excited to see how this comes together.
