Review : Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden: So Good It’s Scary

In this current era of gaming, when publishers and AAA developers eschew risk with a strategy of licensed properties, remasters, and sequels, a new IP is a truly novel concept. The reality of that risk is not lost on this reviewer; the corpses of failed game ideas litter the digital…

Review : Slot Shots Pinball Ultimate Edition : Lucky Skillshot

There was a time when pinball was the arcade. Well before we had video screens on which to do our gaming, there were games of skill on which to prove ourselves, and pinball ruled them all. It is important that we recognize the difference between these "games of skill" and…

Review : Granblue Fantasy: Relink : Primal Time

Heading into the onslaught of JRPG releases for this early half of 2024, where we are either getting the next big sequel or a full-fledged remake of a beloved franchise, I sure didn’t have Granblue Fantasy: Relink on my radar. This sort of sequel/spinoff for a franchise whose existence was…

Review : Tekken 8 : The People’s Champ

The original Tekken, published and developed by NAMCO, released in a video game era much different than our current one. 3D gaming and polygon models were all the rage, and innovation and creativity were encouraged. While the fighting game genre already made the 3D and polygonal transition with Virtua Fighter,…

Review : The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered : A Dark Return

I can’t imagine a franchise nowadays that is so hard for me to praise like Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. Looking at it holistically, Naughty Dog’s seminal action/survival horror series is what I consider the ultimate benchmark of what a quality third person, cinematic action-adventure game should be, with…

Review : Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown : Fit for a King

Prince of Persia and I have a connection. Back in the days when computers were rare in schools and children would fight over who got to play on them, the original Prince of Persia was one that was often loaded up via floppy disc. Of course, we had no idea…

Review : Avatar Frontiers of Pandora : Blue Man Group

Ask me what the plot is for James Cameron’s 2009 financial smash hit Avatar and its equally successful 2022 sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, and I basically come up empty handed without looking at Wikipedia. Other than a vague recollection of the first movie being so similar to something…

Review : God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla : God of Hope

In a year that’s already given me so much to be satisfied with, I sure wasn’t expecting any more surprises as we start winding down. Color me surprised. When Sony Santa Monica revealed the long rumored DLC content for their critical and commercial hit God of War: Ragnarok this past…

Review : Final Fantasy XVI: Echoes of the Fallen : Alpha, Omega

Final Fantasy XVI is high up there as one of my absolute favorite games to come out in 2023. As divisive as the game’s radical gameplay re-imagining was amongst hardcore fans, the switch to a more hardcore Devil May Cry style action game worked for me (while I also understood…

Review : The Last Faith : Great Looks, Questionable Choices

As the old truism goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In the gaming industry, however, the finest line separates imitation from inspiration. Game developers who stray too far toward imitation will likely be accused of creating a soul-less ripoff of other games. But let inspiration run amok, and…

Review : Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 : Be Greater-er

Insomniac Games is back with the latest in its acclaimed Spider-Man series and this time it's a proper sequel to the game that swung the beloved studio to the top of everyone's AAA blockbuster tier list. However, with big sequels comes big responsibilities, especially when the original stuck the landing…

The Invincible is a classic, science-fiction novel from Polish author Stanislaw Lem that was published in 1964. As the foundation for its new game, developer Starward Industries and publisher 11-bit Studios adapted the core of the novel to create a new, first-person narrative adventure. Review : Super Mario Bros. Wonder : Aptly Named

There are few moments in my gaming life that come close to the wonder I experienced when I first played Nintendo's Super Mario World on the SNES. A few have come close, but no games eclipsed the sheer awe I witnessed as masterful and challenging level design was matched by…
