Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, released in December of 2024, ended up being one of my favourite games of the year, perfectly capturing the tone of those classic movies. So, I was delighted at the opportunity to once again don the Fedora and step back into the shoes of the intrepid treasure hunter.
The Order of Giants is around 3-4 hours in length. The expansion is not accessible as standalone content, instead taking place within the main game and accessible once you have reached the Vatican, framed as another side quest. This puzzle-heavy quest will see you exploring catacombs, dungeons, and sewers within the city, facing off against new enemies and culminating in a boss fight that, for me, was the weakest aspect of this new quest.
Brains over Brawn
As I mention above, The Order of Giants is puzzle-heavy, with 4 “major” puzzles and couple of smaller ones packed into its 3-4 hour run time. These were a highlight for me. As much as I enjoy dispatching nazis, these puzzles were unique and offered a great change of pace and challenge that I found really enjoyable. I particularly delighted in a puzzle that saw you guiding a flaming ball through a maze (reminiscent of Crystal Maze), along with another puzzle that had you interpret murals, which you then had to mimic by rotating images engraved in stone tablets on the ground.
Knowledge is Power
It wouldn’t be Indiana Jones without treasure, and The Order of Giants offers its fair share of treasures, collectibles, and lore to discover. I found myself taking the time to read all of the notes and lore I found as they painted an interesting picture, and this was enhanced by the small touch of Indy commenting, if only just a few words, on some of they key lore points as you discover them.
The Dungeons of Doom
Whilst The Order of Giants is indeed puzzle-heavy, it is not without its enemies. Some of these are the familiar Fascists you find in the main game, but the majority are cultists. Introduced in this DLC, for me, these cultists are reminiscent of the cult Indy faces off against in the Temple Of Doom movie, and I enjoyed pitting myself against an enemy with a different motive than those in the main story. As with the main game, stealth is often the path that the game guides you down, though most of these cultists don’t use firearms, so a skilled pugilist could dispatch them with their fists or one of the many objects found in the environment.
The quest culminates in a boss fight that, for me, was the weakest part of this new questline. It is by no means “bad” but, rather, slightly underwhelming and somewhat abrupt. It offered a mild challenge, but it ultimately was a slightly unsatisfying end to a really enjoyable DLC.
The Order of Giants is more Indiana Jones. It does not do anything to change the formula of the main game and instead offers more of the great experience that Machine Games crafted in The Great Circle. Troy Baker is, once again, brilliant. The locations are exciting, the puzzles are thought provoking, and the new storyline is intriguing. Despite not quite sticking the landing, this DLC offers a great 3-4 hours, and, if you are hungry for more Indiana Jones, you won’t be disappointed.
