PUBG to Introduce A.I. Driven “Co-Playable Characters”

Krafton plans to introduce a new type of A.I. companion in PUBG. Named “Co-Playable Characters” the idea is to take an A.I. companion to the next-level, where they can support and interact with real players.

According to Krafton, a CPC is an A.I. companion driven by an on-device Small Language Model (SLM) that has been built with Nvidia’s Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE). The most important distinction from your traditional A.I. companions is that CPCs can be interacted with more like real co-operative players.

“Unlike traditional NPCs, CPCs are equipped with the ability to interact and cooperate with users as they understand and respond to game situations in a human-like manner. Players can converse and strategize with their AI-powered CPC companion just like they would a human teammate, greatly enhancing gameplay.”

Specific to PUBG, these CPCs will be labeled and “Allies” and able to team up with the player. Thus you’ll be able to queue in Duos by yourself should you choose while still retaining a capable (in theory) teammate. Krafton showed off the tech in the above video which demonstrates a PUBG player using voice to instruct their Ally for items like a vest, ammo, and a vehicle. The video also shows how your Ally will identify enemies nearby and even lay down covering fire for the player.

Of course, a lot of questions immediately come to mind relating to efficiency, the percentage at which commands will be completely understood, how competent the Ally will be in a real-match, and many more. Regardless, it’s yet another way that A.I. is entering the gaming space.
