This summer at Summer Games Fest, I had the pleasure of being one of the first to play a pre-release version of Console Wars : The Card Game. Created by my friend and XboxEra co-founder, Jon Clarke, the game is a “a satirical, parody-filled spin on the gaming industry.”
In order to win the Console Wars, content is king, and intellectual property ownership of the best games is everything. In order to emerge victorious, players will need to battle for ownership of 4 full sets of IP across multiple genres, from action-packed first-person shooters, iconic platformers and deep, complex RPGs. Throughout play, you’ll try to amass as many fans as you can – without them, you have no momentum, and arguably no platform at all – so keeping fans is critical to holding on to your precious gaming franchises. Will you emerge victorious? Can you survive the relentless ups and downs of the video game industry?
Sitting with Jon and a few of my peers, we shared drinks and laughs while competing to gain popular IPs and the fanboys that support them. Console Wars is a fast-paced game where you’ll constantly be aiming to gain an advantage in the market no matter how you can. Because of this, there’s a strong competitive aspect of the game as you try to steal away IPs and fans from others.
I’ll have more to say on Console Wars in the coming weeks and Jon and the team will also be present at Gamescom later this month to show off more details about the game. The card game is currently being promoted through a Kickstarter campaign to bring it to full production if you’d like to be a supporter!
