While the recent layoffs were certainly an indicator, there was hope that G4 would continue on in some form. Alas, that is not the case. As reported by Deadline, Comcast has officially pulled the plug on the channel, and all operations are to be shut down, effective immediately.
Dave Scott, Chairman and CEO of Comcast Spectacor, issued the following internal statement:
Our Take
This is unfortunate. It feels as though the industry is ripe for a channel like G4, and it certainly had the name recognition, but, sadly, they were unable to turn that into meaningful content. In my opinion the poor slate of shows didn’t stand out from the very crowded gaming creator space in 2022 while also not providing anything unique.
As always, it’s disappointing to see creators in gaming journalism lose their work, and we wish them all nothing but the best in their future endeavors.
