1047 Games, developers of Splitgate, have had quite the ride the past few weeks. After quietly entering beta on July 13th, two million players have since downloaded the beta with up to 75,000 playing concurrently. Obviously for a small team of four, this has been quite the challenge.
Today, the team announced that the “full” release of the title would be pushed to August. CEO and Co-Founder Ian Proulx said:
Our team has been blown away by the incredible reception the Splitgate community has shown us. With the steep and sudden increase in players trying to access servers, we’re having to sort out a myriad of technical issues that come with this level of insane growth. We’ve worked hard to provide a high-quality game and experience, and our biggest challenge is simply to have enough capacity to serve the entire community.
The team then announced that an updated beta release would launch tomorrow, July 27th, that features many of the planned additions to the full release. This includes:
- Three new maps
- Keyboard and Mouse support
- FOV slider for consoles
- Customized controller layouts
Additional work on Splitgate is ramping up courtesy of a $10 million capital investment from Human Capital. Human Capital is a venture firm for engineers that invests in startups and helps them build and scale their engineering teams. They’ll help 1047 Games access much needed engineering and technical support as the small developer and publisher scales the back-end and infrastructure for Splitgate and accommodate its explosive growth as it heads towards its official launch.
I vividly remember Ian sharing his vision for gaming five years ago, and it’s amazing to see millions of people now experiencing that early idea with Splitgate. But it’s just the beginning for him and the team, and we’re excited to be a part of what’s next for 1047 Games.
