In a strange bit of reporting from Sony this morning, they have announced that all sales of the PS5 will be online only this holiday season.
After previously reporting that production increases would allow there to be upwards of 10 million PS5s manufactured for this holiday season, far higher than the original 5-6 million, Sony is now saying that no PS5s will be available in stores. Instead, all sales will be online only through Sony themselves and their retail partners.
Hi all – the launch of the PlayStation 5 console on November 12 (or November 19, depending on your region) is almost upon us! In the interest of keeping our gamers, retailers, and staff safe amidst COVID-19, today we are confirming that all day-of launch sales will be conducted through the online stores of our retail partners.
No units will be available in-store for purchase on launch day (November 12 or November 19, depending on your region) – please don’t plan on camping out or lining up at your local retailer on launch day in hopes of finding a PS5 console for purchase. Be safe, stay home, and place your order online.
Our Take
While we certainly understand the concerns relating to the pandemic, it seems a little strange that Sony would mandate globally that no PS5s would be sold in stores. That would typically be a decision that is made by the chains themselves. Regardless, if you haven’t ordered a PS5 yet and want one, it’s time to start hunting online!
