Bungie Lays Out Destiny’s Future with Expansions and Content Road Map

Wrapping up just now, the Bungie live stream to reveal the future of Destiny has fans excited and for good reason. There were some very meaningful announcements for the community. Let’s dive in.

First things first, the stream began with a dedication to the Black Lives Matter campaign and the ways in which people can contribute.

Once the stream fully began, fans were treated to some very exciting news about the future of Destiny. Here are the details:

  • There will be no sequel to Destiny 2. Instead, Bungie will continue to support and expand Destiny 2 over the next few years (at least).
    • In this vein, Bungie is creating the Destiny Content Vault. Lesser played activities will be vaulted for periods of time, updated for Destiny 2, and over time will be re-introduced for players.
      • This includes content from the original Destiny including strikes and raids.
  • Bungie announced three expansions for Destiny 2. The first is titled Beyond Light and arrives on all platforms on September 22nd.
    • According to the developers, it is “the beginning of a new era of Destiny“.

  • After discussing Beyond Light, the stream showed fans the progression of the Destiny story since 2014 culminating with the announcement of the “The Witch Queen” expansion that will begin in 2021…

  • For players that have invested into the Destiny eco-system, Bungie also presented some positive details.
    • Destiny 2 will be upgraded to 4K/60fps for free on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
    • Cross-generational play will be enabled at launch for each ecosystem. That means that if you are on a PS5 and a friend is on a PS4, you can still play together uninterrupted.
    • Bungie is working on eventually opening crossplay for all platforms to play together in 2021 including the next-gen consoles and PC.
  • Bungie then gave a few details on what’s coming this summer along with how they would continue to communicate with the community on the next expansion and future content.
    • This summer is titled “The Season of Arrivals” and it begins now.

Our Take

It’s great to see Bungie planning support for Destiny for the next few years and we applaud the way they are going about it. Adding continual new content, reviving old content, and supporting the next-generation of consoles for free is what it’s all about. It’s going to be fun to continue to watch the game evolve over time!
