Square-Enix Confirms No PS5 nor Series X Exclusives Until “Farther Down the Road”

Square Enix

Quite a stir was caused a few weeks ago when Matt Booty, Head of Xbox Game Studios, said that the Xbox Series X would not have any exclusives for “a year or two” due to cross-generation compatibility.

As we discussed extensively here at SG, this is a pro-consumer move as you can upgrade your hardware at your own pace without feeling as though you’re missing out on specific titles. Meanwhile those who upgrade, will have the highest-end experience (similar to PC).

It seems that Square-Enix is now confirming a similar approach. During its financial results briefing, held on February 5th but just published today, the following question was asked about PlayStation 5 and Series X exclusives:

Could you share your thinking on the development of new titles for current- and next-generation game consoles going forward?

“The next-generation consoles will have backward compatibility, so we plan for the time being to make our new titles available for both current and next-generation consoles. It will therefore be somewhat farther down the road that we release titles exclusively for the next-generation consoles.”

Our Take

This is not a surprise at all and we fully expect the same from many third-party developers. It simply makes the most financial sense and with the modern console architecture, similar to PC, games can still be optimized and play best on the new consoles for those that have upgraded. Everybody wins.
