Ex-BioWare Directors to Head New Studio, Developing New Sci-Fi RPG

Wizards of the Coast, the development studio responsible for the Dungeons & Dragons and Magic The Gathering IPs, is opening a new studio named Archetype Entertainment.

The studio will be lead by two ex-BioWare directors. James Ohlen, formally the Creative Director and Lead Designer at BioWare on titles such as Baldur’s Gate, Dragon’s Age, and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, will act as the Head of Studio. Meanwhile Chad Robertson, who previously served as the Head of Technology and Studio Director at BioWare, will take the roles of Vice President and Studio General Manager for Archetype.

Archetype’s first title is said to be a multi-platform role-playing game “set in an all-new science fiction universe that will send players on a story-driven epic where choices they make will have real consequences on how their story unfolds.”.

Our Take

We’ve talked endlessly about the talent that BioWare has and there’s no doubt that Robertson and Ohlen were two key figures at the studio during the release of some of their most acclaimed titles. With a new studio under their direction as part of the RPG focused Wizards of the Coast, we are very excited to see what they develop.
