Housemarque Celebrates 25th Anniversary, Working on “Biggest Game to Date”

Housemarque, the Finnish developer responsible for such titles as Nex Machina and Resogun, is celebrating their 25th anniversary.

Llari Kuittinen, CEO, offered a statement from the studio celebrating their success over the past 25 years and offering a look back at their humble beginnings.

“Twenty-five years ago, as a fledgling game studio, we started work on two PC titles, Super Stardust and Alien Incident, which were eventually published in 1996. Back in those days the only realistic option to get your game out there was to make a deal with a publisher, who in turn would make an order to print a DVD containing the game, put it in a box and then ship it to retailers.”

Resogun
Resogun was one of the highest rated PS4 launch titles

What’s most interesting to us though, is Kuittinen’s talk on their new title. Along with saying their team is now the largest it’s ever been and the title they are working on is the biggest title they’ve ever made, he offers a little further insight.

“We are working on our biggest and most ambitious title yet and have amazing support from our yet-to-be announced partner. Our team of almost 80 people is comprised of talented, smart and hard working individuals from all around the world, and it has been invigorating and inspiring to see how this game concept has turned into reality as more and more ideas have formed the basis of a truly incredible product. Despite not knowing if we would even get past the initial stages of pre-production, we have now spent almost three years working on this game, and now we are in full scale production and super excited to reveal more in the coming months.” he continued…

“So now we are focused on delivering our most ambitious and biggest game to date, putting every other project on hold, including the development of Stormdivers. It is great that the whole company can come together to deliver this game, which will define the next evolution of Housemarque. We are very humbled to have amazing support from our partner over the course of the past few years, and this support has continuously grown on a monthly basis.”

Our Take

Housemarque has developed some tremendous titles over the year with Resogun being one of the most notable PS4 launch titles and Nex Machina being critically acclaimed as well. Given Kuittinen’s comments about “We are very humbled to have amazing support from our partner over the course of the past few years” we have to assume they are working with Sony and PlayStation on a possible PS4/PS5 title. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more!
