The shake up within PlayStation continues as new CEO Jim Ryan announced that Hermen Hulst of Guerilla Games will take over the role of Head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios. Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Ryan had the following to say:
“Hermen is one of the most effective and well-respected leaders in the video game industry,” he says. “He is a passionate advocate for the teams he leads and understands how to empower creative talent to build great experiences. I have no doubt Hermen can lead our teams to deliver compelling and diverse experiences at a steady cadence.”
What’s most interesting about the move, is that Shuhei Yoshida, the now former President, has been moved to presumably a smaller role in which he will “look after and nurture independent studios”. Per Ryan:
“Everybody knows just how passionate Shu is about independent games — they are lifeblood of the industry, making our content portfolio so special for our gamers.”
Our Take
As we discussed on this week’s Bitcast, there’s definitely a lot of shake up within PlayStation’s org structure and it seems to be the result of Jim Ryan being given the role of CEO. It will be interesting to see if any of these moves are felt across their ecosystem in the coming years and through the PlayStation 5 era.
