Torchlight is an interesting IP. The original was well regarded and made quite an impact on PC and the Xbox 360 in particular. The now defunct Runic Games then developed the sequel which improved on the original in nearly every way – yet was only released on PC thus limiting its audience. After developing Hob years later which wasn’t a large success, Runic Games shut down.
Max Schafer, the previous head of Runic, now leads Echtra Games and with the help of Perfect World Entertainment, is bringing Torchlight back and this time, it’s coming to all platforms in 2019.
Our Take
We’re confused yet intrigued by this news. While we love seeing Torchlight return, what made the title great was its core ARPG elements and based on this early trailer, we’re unsure what to expect. Will it be a true ARPG again? Or are they trying to capitalize on various genres? We’re anxious to find out.
