Playground Games has been a consistent high performer for Microsoft and the Xbox with the critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series. We also know that the studio is staffing up for another AAA IP which is rumored to be the next Fable title. Well, it shouldn’t come as a large surprise then that rumors are now swirling that Microsoft will be acquiring the talented studio as part of their first party portfolio.
Some sleuths online have found that as of May 29th, a gentleman named Keith Ranger Dolliver was appointed to Playground’s Board of Directors. Mr. Dolliver is a VP & Deputy General Counsel of Business and Corporate Development for Microsoft. Given that Playground is currently an independent developer, this obviously raises a few flags. Combined with the fact that Microsoft is investing heavily into new game development and have a very positive relationship with Playground, it seems to add up.
Forza Horizon 3 is, in our opinion, one of the greatest open world racers ever made (if not the greatest) and Playground’s quality has been consistent for years. With news of Fable returning under their care, this only seems to make sense. It also provides Microsoft with top tier development talent across the UK when combined with Rare. Hopefully, we’ll know for sure come E3.
