Square Enix announced the opening of a new development studio based in Tokyo today. Luminous Productions is headed up by Hajime Tabata and staffed with veterans of the industry including development staff from Final Fantasy 15 which Tabata directed.
According to Square Enix, “Luminous Productions was established with the purpose of developing new AAA titles and bringing innovative game and other entertainment content to a global audience.”

Our Take
There have been several departures across studios lately so the announcement of a new studio under Square Enix, especially one headed up by Tabata, is good news. It’s interesting given Tabata’s history that Luminous Productions will be working on “new” AAA IPs but we’re certainly excited to see what they can produce.
