Rumor : Microsoft Reviving the Fable Franchise

Cover

While we try to avoid speculation within the industry, we will post rumors when we believe the sources are credible. In this instance, we are now hearing from several sources including some major outlets that Microsoft is indeed reviving the Fable franchise.

The title is most likely being worked on by Playground Games, developers of the Forza Horizon series, and is still a long ways out from completion. We learned last year that Playground was staffing up to develop another title but at the time, it was said to be cross-platform rather than exclusive and there was no association with an existing Microsoft franchise.

There are still many questions to be answered. First, we have no official confirmation this is true. And of course if it is, we don’t know if it will be a full reboot of the franchise, a continuation in some form, or what style the game will be. After all, it’s been less than two years since Microsoft cancelled the development of the four player co-op Fable Legends. Time will tell.

Our Take

Here at SG, we are very excited at the prospect of a new Fable game and Playground Games has proven to be a AAA developer over the past few years. However, developing a racing title and a large RPG that already has a history with fans are two very different things. So in that vein, we are cautiously optimistic. Hopefully, we’ll learn more in the coming months and at E3.
