Microsoft Confirms Scalebound Cancellation

Likely the biggest, and saddest, news of the day in the gaming world, the upcoming Xbox exclusive from Platinum Games, Scalebound, has been officially cancelled.

News began to surface earlier in the day but here at SG, we don’t post about rumors.  However, shortly afterwards, Microsoft officially confirmed the sad news.  In a blog post over at Windows Central, they issued their official statement:

After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for “Scalebound.” We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including “Halo Wars 2,” “Crackdown 3,” “State of Decay 2,” “Sea of Thieves” and other great experiences.

Our Take

As we posted in our article last week, Scalebound was one of our most anticipated titles of 2017.  With so much development time and talent, the sky was the limit for Scalebound.  Given the extensive time since its debut (E3 2014) and knowing it was originally going to be released in Fall of 2016, we cannot fathom why this game is being cancelled when it’s likely very near completion.  The official statement confirms that Microsoft and Platinum Games have parted ways so we can only imagine there was disagreement at the highest levels.  Hopefully one day we gain some insight into what occurred.  In the mean time, we mourn the loss of one of the most unique looking titles that we were looking forward to.
