While the wait for Borderlands 3 was many years long, if a recent post by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford is anything to go on, the wait for Borderlands 4 won’t be nearly as long.
A rumor that we didn’t report on had previously said that Gearbox was assisting in development on a “Borderlands spinoff”. As always, we don’t report on rumors we don’t trust and as it turns out, Pitchford confirmed it was not true.
I am told of rumors that Gearbox is "assisting" or "co-developing" another Borderlands game (or a new spin-off game). These rumors are NOT accurate. Gearbox is lead dev of any future games in the Borderlands franchise (or any Borderlands adjacent games) with no co-development.

What’s more interesting however, is that he hints that Gearbox is already working on Borderlands 4 with his follow-up post.

Our Take
As we adore Borderlands, we’re very happy to see this. While Borderlands 3 was an excellent game with fantastic support to date, we certainly don’t want to wait another 7 years for a new entry. Let’s hope we get to see it in the next couple of years!
