The AMD and Sony keynotes have now concluded at CES 2020 and sadly for fans hoping for a bigger taste of next generation, there was very little shown.
Likely the most significant piece of new info came prior to the presentations when Phil Spencer showed off the official Xbox Series X SoC on Twitter. As you can see below, the Xbox team chose to retain the “Project Scarlett” moniker for the chip as well as having “8K” engraved. What’s particularly exciting though is the size of the die which indicates a true powerhouse and representative of the most recent figures being discussed.
AMD’s presentation then began this afternoon. As expected they highlighted new laptops, CPU and GPU advancements, new technology, and more. But the PS5 and Series X were only mentioned in passing. And in fact, a 3D model they showed of the Series X turned out to be a poor 3D model by website and not officially from Microsoft.
Sony’s keynote began early this evening and quickly moved to gaming and the PlayStation. The excitement was short lived however as the only news that was truly “new” for the PS5 was…wait for it…the logo.
While the below slide was shown to represent the “feature set” of the PS5, all of this information has readily been available since October when Mark Cerny spoke with Wired.
Jim Ryan did speak to the success of the PlayStation brand and in particular, sales figures for the PS4 and PSVR along with PSN monthly active users.
Our Take
While we didn’t expect a full reveal of the PS5 or any detailed presentation on the Series X, it is disappointing we didn’t get a little more than a logo and a tease. Regardless, our excitement for the official PS5 reveal continues to be high. Meanwhile, the PS4 continues to impress with huge numbers in sales and engagement.
Seeing the Series X SoC is exciting as we mentioned above as its size represents a true monster of a console. We can’t wait to learn more!
