Redfall end-capped the Xbox/Bethesda conference and was a wonderful new surprise. Developed by Arkane Austin (Dishonored, Prey), Redfall is one of the most exciting new IPs coming to the Xbox ecosystem. It is being developed for the Xbox Series consoles and PC and will release in summer of 2022.
Redfall aims to combine the traits that Arkane is famous for: exploration, unique abilities, FPS combat, and player agency. Arkane’s official description is as follows:
Redfall is an open-world co-op FPS from Arkane Austin, the award-winning team behind Prey and Dishonored. Continuing Arkane’s legacy of carefully crafted worlds and love of creative game mechanics, Redfall brings the studio’s signature gameplay to the co-operative action and FPS genres.
“Every game we make is a little different for the last,” says Co-Creative Director Ricardo Bare. “Dishonored featured stealth. Prey leveraged tons of physics-related gameplay. Mooncrash introduced rogue-like elements. Despite those differences, in every case our focus remains on deep world building and inventive game mechanics. The same will be true of Redfall.”
At the heart of Redfall is the island itself, which the developers promise will be able to be explored in “typical Arkane fashion.” For those who have spent time in Dishonored and/or Prey, this is incredibly exciting.
Redfall has been taken siege by a legion of vampires who have cut off the island from the outside world. And according to Arkane, these vampires are “not your typical bloodsuckers.”
They were created after a scientific experiment went horribly wrong and are continuing to evolve. After their transformation, some vampires develop powerful abilities and grow into bigger and badder vampires. But they’re not the only thing standing in your way – players will also face off against the human cultists who worship the island’s hungry new leadership with the hopes of joining their ranks.
As the player, you will take the role of one of the survivors to fight back. Redfall blends single and multiplayer together so you can play however you choose. The game supports up to four player co-op with a diverse team of survivors to choose from. Players will be able to experiment with different loadouts and also be able to combine their skills together as a team.
Let’s take a closer look at each of the heroes:
Described as an internet-famous paranormal investigator, amateur cryptozoologist, and aspiring invent, Devinder landed in Redfall on a book tour and is now trapped. After spending years struggling to create cutting-edge tech to hunt paranormal phenomena, it’s finally beginning to click. As he puts his inventions to use battling the vampire hordes, he documents every step of the way in the search of self-validation.
Layla moved to Redfall from Wisconsin as she studied biomedical engineering at Redfall Technical University and interned at the ominous Aevum Therapeutics research facility. Something went wrong at the facility and she says everything after is a blur. The last thing she remembers is waking up with telekinetic powers.
Remi De La Rosa
Remi is a brilliant combat engineer. She’s lived her life on the frontlines of conflict and has protected her loved ones and those in need as part of an elite Navy rescue unit. On their way to investigate Redfall, her ship was destroyed, and her entire crew lost. Now, with the help of her robot cohort, she’s determined to help Redfall’s survivors.
Jacob is an ex-military sharpshooter, sent into Redfall just before the sun darkened as part of an elite private security force. Separated from his platoon, he is now a rogue, stalking the streets of Redfall. He neutralizes evil from the shadows and is always under the watchful eye of a ragged raven.
