Electronics Arts Acquires Dirt 5 Developer Codemasters

Codemasters Group Holdings has agreed to a $1.2 billion bid from Electronic Arts, which was a counter bid to a $956 million offer from Take-Two Interactive.

Codemasters is the well-known developer responsible for such franchises as Dirt and the F1 titles. After the acquisition agreement, Codemasters issued the following statement:

“To strengthen the position that Codemasters has built within the racing category, there is an increasing necessity for additional investment in both resources and skills across its portfolio,”

There are no further details at this time but we will update you as we learn more of possible changes to Codemasters portfolio given EA’s extensive IP ownership.

Our Take

As with any acquisition of this nature, it’s impossible to tell how it will turn out at this point in time. Codemasters is a strong developer and we’d love to see them be able to flex their muscle on further IPs in the future.
