PlayStation 5 UI Design to be All-New, Goal for Navigation is “Milliseconds”

One of the questions that hasn’t been answered just yet for either the Xbox Series X or the PlayStation 5, is what the operating system and corresponding UI will look like. While the Series X will reportedly use the current Xbox One UI with some added features and updates, we’ve learned that the PS5 will use an entirely new design.

Matt MacLaurin, the VP of UX Design for PlayStation, has taken to LinkedIn to provide some information on the design focus for the PS5 UI. Here’s what we know:

  • It will be a complete overhaul of the PS4 UI.
  • It will be an entirely new visual language.
  • Focus is on speed in milliseconds.

Our Take

Generally speaking, we heard few complaints with the PS4’s UI but we are looking forward to seeing fresh thinking from the PlayStation team for the PS5. We do hope they add more robust features and more functionality than exist today.
