Outriders : Full Details on the Next-Gen, RPG, Sci-Fi Shooter

Outriders from Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly and Square-Enix, is one of the first games being shown for the next generation of consoles. And from what we’ve seen so far, it certainly looks like a title that will be a joy to play on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Let’s dive in.

First, Outriders is a co-op RPG for 1 to 3 players set in a dark sci-fi universe. It is described as follows from PCF:

Outriders is a 1-3 player co-op RPG shooter set in an original, dark and desperate sci-fi universe. As mankind bleeds out in the trenches of Enoch, you’ll create your own Outrider and embark on a journey across the hostile planet. With rich storytelling spanning a diverse world, you’ll leave behind the slums and shanty towns of the First City and traverse forests, mountains and desert in the pursuit of a mysterious signal. Combining intense gunplay with violent powers and an arsenal of increasingly twisted weaponry and gear-sets, Outriders offers countless hours of gameplay from one of the finest shooter developers in the industry.

Classes

There are four character classes in Outriders but so far, only three have been unveiled.

  • Pyromancer – Unleash devastating volcanic energy and flames
  • Trickster – Manipulate the fabric of time and space
  • Devastators – Shatter and control the earth around you

RPG Elements and Customization

Outriders features deep customization of your character through gear, weaponry, and even vehicles.

World and Story

As an Outrider, you were a vanguard on the planet of Enoch prior to the “anomaly storms”. Now, after being altered, you are now on a journey to uncover the source of a mysterious signal.

Our Take

As I’m sure many are thinking, this looks to be equal parts Destiny, Anthem, and Gears of War which is not necessarily a bad thing. While it doesn’t look wholly original, we’re more focused on the quality of the game. That is, will it feel polished to play, does it have a deep loot system, and will the end-game activities be meaningful? These types of titles are notoriously difficult to get right out of the gate, but we certainly hope they can pull it off. Stay tuned for more coverage in the coming months!
