Battlefield V : DICE Cancels Plans for 5v5 Competitive Mode

If you may recall, back in May DICE announced a 5v5 competitive mode that would be coming to Battlefield V. The mode was to supplement the traditionally large PvP modes that Battlefield is known for and allow it to compete against titles such as Call of Duty.

Sadly, DICE announced today that the mode has been cancelled. In an official statement, Senior Producer Ryan McArthur said the following:

The added focus on improving the quality of the experience and adding more of the content you want has led us to step back from our original plans to offer a competitive 5v5 mode. Not creating this mode was a tough decision, but vital for us to more quickly reach our bug-crushing and content goals. However, we will still pursue building a competitive gaming experience in Battlefield. We know that there’s already an existing competitive scene in our community, and we’re helping build features to support these communities. We want to work more closely with our players to help improve the tools that they have available to shape their play experience. This way, we can better support the places where competitive Battlefield V play already exists.

Our Take

This is a shame as we were hoping to see a more focused and competitive experience in Battlefield. We’re not quite sure the direction Battlefield is taking in the long-term as it seems to be convoluted. It feels as though there’s some soul-searching that needs to take place particularly with Call of Duty seeming to have hit a home run with Modern Warfare. We hope DICE takes some time and brings a fresh Battlefield to the industry next-gen.
