Sony Confirms that PSN ID Changes are Finally Coming in Early 2019

Pro

This has been a conversation across the industry for so long, we honestly didn’t think it was ever going to change. But today, Sony confirmed that PSN ID changes are finally coming in early 2019 for all users though sadly, there are caveats. The details are as follows:

  • The feature is coming for some Preview members soon. It will arrive for all users in early 2019.
  • The first change is free but after that they will cost $9.99 for regular users or $4.99 for PS Plus members.
  • When you change your ID, you’ll have the option to display your old ID alongside your new ID so your friends can still recognize you.

However, here’s the concerning one:

  • The feature is compatible with PS4 games originally published after April 1st, 2018 and a large majority of the most-played PS4 games. However, not all games and applications for PS4, PS3, and Vita will support the online ID change and thus you may encounter issues or errors. If so, you may need to revert back to your original ID.

Our Take

After all this time, we can’t believe it’s not as simple as simply changing your name across all PlayStation related applications and devices. While we’re sure it’s far more complicated than it seems on the surface, it’s still rather disappointing. But at least we’re finally moving in the right direction.
