Square Enix Drops IO Interactive, Future of Hitman in Question

IO Interactive, developers of the most recent Hitman installments, has been dropped by Square Enix.  Legal documents show that Square Enix have “withdrawn” from the business of IO.  However, Square Enix retains the rights to the Hitman IP and so, we’re unsure what that means for the future of the series.

Our Take

This is sad news.  The most recent Hitman seemed to be a big hit with fans after they got past the initial change of the approach to installments.  We know that fans were anticipating the next round of Hitman installments so it will be interesting to see where Square Enix takes the series in the future.  With regard to IO Interactive, we hope the developers are acquired or find other projects quickly.
